About Families Moving Forward
Families Moving Forward is the family shelter program of Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation providing emergency shelter and supportive services for families with children. Founded in 1999, Families Moving Forward has always worked with congregations to carry out its mission. In 2010, Families Moving Forward merged with Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation, also committed to ending homelessness.
Today we collaborate with more than 40 host congregations in the Twin Cities metropolitan area that welcome families to overnight shelter and meals at their congregation sites for a week or more during the year; congregations that support our programs; and several in our North Minneapolis neighborhood that are working on permanent housing solutions for our community. Collectively they represent a wide variety of faith traditions and denominations.
Our shared goal is to move families from homelessness to into permanent homes, whether PCNF housing or other affordable options.
Some families need support as they make the transition from being homeless into permanent housing. Our family advocates work closely with former FMF guests to help them adjust to their new situation, maintain their commitment to financial responsibility and balance the needs of their families with work or education. Our Keys to Success program offers rent subsidies for a year, ongoing staff support and for working parents
The Families Moving Forward Day Center in North Minneapolis is the hub of daytime activity for families in our shelter program. Children are transported to and from school or Head Start from the Day Center. Parent resources at the Day Center include computers, a kitchen, storage for personal belongings, laundry facilities and a children's play area. Our staff advocates assist parents as they pursue their housing and employment goals.
